Guitar prodigy returns home for Purdue show
For classical guitar prodigy Chaconne Klaverenga, putting on a show for her hometown is an appreciated change from her typical touring schedule.
“It was great,” she said Sunday. “It was different because so many people I know said they would be coming to see me play, so it wasn’t so bad.”
Hundreds of people packed Purdue University’s Loeb Playhouse to be a part of the 17-year-old’s first big Lafayette-area show in more than two years.
West Lafayette’s Diego Solis said it was worth the wait.
“She’s amazing,” Solis said after the show. “If you close your eyes when you listen to her play, you’d think it was a CD. She doesn’t make mistakes or play any wrong notes.”
Named after Johann Sebastian Bach's “Chaconne in D-minor,” Klaverenga started playing piano as a toddler and began guitar lessons with her parents at age 6.
The daughter of Jim Klaverenga of Klaverenga Guitar & Piano Studio, she became attracted to the instrument because of how often she heard it at home.
By age 14, Klaverenga was traveling the world and earning honors in prominent international competitions. To date, she holds 10 national and international classical guitar championship titles.
In 2009, she was featured in a duet with maestro JoAnn Faletta and the Buffalo, N.Y., Philharmonic on National Public Radio’s “From the Top” program. While still a high school student, she became the youngest collegiate division winner in the history of the Society of American Musicans’ Classical Guitar Competition in Chicago.
On Sunday, Klaverenga put on a show comprised of songs from her two CDs — “Debut” and “Chaconne plays the Chaconne and Spanish Favorites” — as well as new Spanish, Italian and Turkish guitar pieces picked up from her Chicago-based guitar teacher, Denis Azabagic.
Klaverenga said she dedicated 4 1/2 hours of practice to Sunday’s show.
“I usually try to get in five hours before a performance, but I’ve been really busy the last few weeks,” she said.
Martin Jacobs of Lafayette said Klaverenga seemed calm and natural on stage.
For Klaverenga, the best part of the show is stepping back onto the stage for the encore.

As of late, St. Stephens Church is Ferguson is making a lot of noise. "St. Stephens the Church is like a lot of these churches that are having a hard time growing," said Steve Lawler. Inspiration for Episcopal priest Steve Lawler to start a new page. "We realized the traditional arts communtiy and cultural community in St. Louis doesn't always serve North County."
And realizing the power of music, Lawler started a guitar program open to children and young adults. "This is really our attempt to put the guitar and music lesson and all of that in the hands of kids who might not be able to have this opportunity."
Because, in this program, the strings come attached. "We provide the guitars. So part of the fundraising we've done and continue to do is to help buy the guitars."
And for parents, the cost of lessons is like music to their... you know. "The lessons, believe it or not, are $5."
And yes. There is a catch to all of this.
"What we say to the kids involved is use this to give back to others, to bring joy to others," said Lawler.

ALTON — Three musicians with years of experience in a variety of styles came together in 2004 to form a new kind of group.
Fiddleback, a kind of grained maple wood often used in the construction of musical instruments such as the back and neck of a violin, became the name of the dynamic instrumental trio: Victoria Brannan and Andrew Driscoll on violins and Grant Krener on guitar. The group plays everything from hot fiddle to jazz, classical and — most recently — even a little rock.
Set to perform Saturday, March 27, at the Jacoby Arts Center, the program will feature a mix of original songs and familiar tunes, Brannan said.
"It will be a really fun concert with a variety of music," she said. "And we even have a few surprises."
Special guest bass player Terry Kippenberger will perform with Fiddleback, along with guest cellist Ranya Iqbal, who performs in a variety of styles — classical, jazz, rock, fiddle and gypsy.
"This is the first time we have incorporated a cellist, and I know it will really add something special to the sound," Brannan said. "Ranya can really jam. She has a different style and a real flair."
The diverse experiences of the three core group members help them to produce the unique sound that is Fiddleback. Guitarist Krener and violinist Driscoll come from jazz backgrounds. Violist and violinist Brannan is a fiddle player at heart. All have played in groups ranging from classical orchestras to rock and roll bands.
Brannan received a bachelor’s in music education from Furman University in Greenville, S.C., where she studied with violist Lenny Schranze. She continued viola studies with Victoria Chiang at the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton, Fla. She plays viola with Union Avenue Opera Theatre and New Opera St. Louis, and is a violin and viola instructor at Greenville College and Lewis and Clark Community College. Brannan plays a Blaze acoustic-electric five-string violin in Fiddleback.
Driscoll picked up the violin at age 6, and that was it. He studied jazz violin with Matt Glaser at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he was awarded the Stephane Grapelli Jazz Masters Incentive Award. He earned a bachelor’s degree in violin performance from Berklee and a master’s in violin performance at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, along with a Suzuki certification. He teaches the Suzuki method within the Greater St. Louis Suzuki Association. He plays violin in Fiddleback and the jazz fusion group, Bach to the Future.
Krener has been playing guitar for 20 years. He studied jazz guitar and music composition at Jefferson College and Webster University and earned a master’s degree in jazz studies. He is an adjunct professor at St. Charles (Mo.) Community College, where he directs jazz ensembles and teaches jazz guitar lessons.
Part of the group’s vision is to promote the re-establishment of the violin as a cutting-edge instrument in American music with songs like "Mambo Juice," with its jazz influence, Texas swing songs like "Big Day," bluegrass tunes like "Chasing Charlotte" and "River Run," and jazz ballads like "Waiting for You," with rock as their newest genre addition.
Fiddleback performs at a variety of venues, including concert halls such as The Sheldon in St. Louis, schools, libraries, and festivals such as the St. Louis Art Fair. Fiddleback’s newest album is a collection of 12 original collaborations written by the three musicians, ranging from soulful ballads to hot swing, with the goal of writing new, exciting music for strings.
The St. Louis Fiddle Ensemble also will perform at JAC in conjunction with Fiddleback. The ensemble is an eclectic group of students aged 9 to 20 who perform bluegrass, jazz and blues fiddle styles.
Driscoll and Brannan founded the ensemble to give students an opportunity to just get together and play.
"We realized there wasn’t really anything like that available," Brannan said. "It’s so important for young players to have a chance to just ‘play’ with other young musicians."

Veteran singer-songwriter Brooks Williams will make his Lake County Folk Club debut at El Barrio Restaurant and Lounge in Mundelein this Sunday night at 7 p.m.
Recently named one of The Top 100 Acoustic Guitar Players, Williams is a Georgia native who has been based in Boston since his late teens.

"To be on that list with people like Doc Watson and David Bromberg and Chet Atkins, that's an honor, those people are my heroes," said Williams, 51.
Williams describes his sound as an Americana blues hybrid.
"I'm working from the tradition of roots music with echoes of country blues. If you could connote Lighting Hopkins with Johnny Cash, you might get a sense of some of the roots I am dealing with."
For his appearance Sunday, Williams will play songs from his new album, "Baby O," his 17th solo recording since 1990. Williams said the title song deals with a long-distance love relationship.
"Being one who travels a lot and has to deal with the reality of being in relationship where you have a great distance between you and your partner is kind of a central theme."
All the songs on "Baby O" have a strong connection to roots music.
"If you listen to 'Last Chance Love,' that's a classic country waltz with a little bit of pedal steel in there as well. That's typically what a dance band would play as the last song of the night to waltz with the person you love.
"'Amazing Grace' brings out the gospel slide guitar and 'Sugar Sweet' is an old Muddy Waters classic. I ended up with Duke Ellington because 'I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)' is just a fantastic song. Anyone who has been in that situation knows that lyric writer totally hit the nail on the head."
The album also features "All Been Said," "a dark night of the soul" breakup song and "Frank Delandry," a tribute to a legendary 19th century New Orleans guitar player.
"He died mysteriously," Williams said. "A lot of those guys lived hard and died young and little is known about them."
Williams also will play tunes from his previous album, "The Time I Spent With You."
"It's a mix of traditional blues and blues-inspired tunes that I've written and I throw in some instrumentals as well. I don't feel the need to play my material all the time. I'm happiest when it's a mix because there are so many great songs out there that I want to bring to an audience."
Growing up in Statesboro, Ga., Williams knew he wanted to play guitar at the age of 5.
"Sitting outside the door of my brothers' room listening to them blasting Eric Clapton, I remember the pulse and the beat through the walls and really liking the feel of it. I remember thinking, 'That's cool, that's what I want to do.'"
A self-taught player, Williams learned to play by gleaning what he could from listening to record albums.
"As I got older, then I would go to gigs. There were loads of little clubs in Boston and I could sit right in the front row and that was like a guitar lesson."
Williams admits there isn't much of a Georgia sound to his voice.
"I didn't hang onto my accent," he said. "What is weird is that when I went up to Boston that was the first time I heard traditional country blues. I actually learned more about my Southern musical heritage being in the North."
After sowing some wild oats in college in Salem, Mass., Williams found employment as a middle school history teacher.
"But I knew I always wanted to play music. I was 24 when I made the plunge and left teaching to get out and gig, so it's been about 23 years that I've been earning my living as a musician.
"I've done a lot of traveling, met a lot of people, learned and played and written a lot of songs. I really feel like the luckiest guy in the world that I have one of the greatest jobs on the planet."

Veteran singer-songwriter Brooks Williams will make his Lake County Folk Club debut at El Barrio Restaurant and Lounge in Mundelein this Sunday night at 7 p.m.
Recently named one of The Top 100 Acoustic Guitar Players, Williams is a Georgia native who has been based in Boston since his late teens.

"To be on that list with people like Doc Watson and David Bromberg and Chet Atkins, that's an honor, those people are my heroes," said Williams, 51.
Williams describes his sound as an Americana blues hybrid.
"I'm working from the tradition of roots music with echoes of country blues. If you could connote Lighting Hopkins with Johnny Cash, you might get a sense of some of the roots I am dealing with."
For his appearance Sunday, Williams will play songs from his new album, "Baby O," his 17th solo recording since 1990. Williams said the title song deals with a long-distance love relationship.
"Being one who travels a lot and has to deal with the reality of being in relationship where you have a great distance between you and your partner is kind of a central theme."
All the songs on "Baby O" have a strong connection to roots music.
"If you listen to 'Last Chance Love,' that's a classic country waltz with a little bit of pedal steel in there as well. That's typically what a dance band would play as the last song of the night to waltz with the person you love.
"'Amazing Grace' brings out the gospel slide guitar and 'Sugar Sweet' is an old Muddy Waters classic. I ended up with Duke Ellington because 'I Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)' is just a fantastic song. Anyone who has been in that situation knows that lyric writer totally hit the nail on the head."
The album also features "All Been Said," "a dark night of the soul" breakup song and "Frank Delandry," a tribute to a legendary 19th century New Orleans guitar player.
"He died mysteriously," Williams said. "A lot of those guys lived hard and died young and little is known about them."
